Inducted 1965. Charter member of the Hall of Fame. Howie Schultz played center and forward during four years of basketball at Hamline, lettering four times in basketball, twice in baseball and once in track. He was a member of Hamline's first NAIA national championship basketball team (1942) and received All-American honors. Following his freshman year, he played first base for Grand Forks in the Northern League. The Saint Paul Saints purchased his contract in 1942. Schultz was named "rookie of the year" in the American Association in 1943, went to the Brooklyn Dodgers that same year and remained with them until going to the Philadelphia Phillies in 1947. He finished his pro baseball career with the Cincinnati Reds.

In 1946 Schultz began a professional basketball career that lasted eight years. He finished his pro basketball career in 1953 after two seasons with the Minneapolis Lakers. He then became basketball and baseball coach at Mechanic Arts High School in Saint Paul. He was Hamline's head basketball, baseball and golf coach, and assistant professor of physical and health education from 1965 to 1972. He went into business for Acadian Candles, serving as president until his retirement. He has been active in Hamline alumni activities, and received the Outstanding Service Award in 1987 from the Hamline University Alumni Association. He is past president of the Piper Athletic Association.
