Twelve months ago, I addressed the Hamline University at Convocation amid a climate of economic uncertainty and with mounting concern about our students’ ability to remain at Hamline in the face of towering obstacles. We had once again been ranked as one of the “Great Schools, Great Prices” by U.S. News and World Report, but we were not immune to the challenges brought forth by a shattered economy.
Rather than hold tight and wait out the storm, we decided to lean into the winds of change. We vowed to redouble our efforts to make Hamline accessible for the many families struggling financially and to keep pace with the needs of our changing student population. We promised to make responsible financial decisions as an institution and to ensure that we continue to provide an educational experience that is second to none.
