Race Disparities in Twin Cities Employment: Challenges and Opportunities

Mike Wynne will present and lead a discussion on findings of several reports in recent years that point to deep disparities along racial lines in employment and economic opportunities in the Twin Cities region, the present state of the issue and its future implications.

The presentation will explore causes of these community challenges and the adverse impact on people, neighborhoods and the region as a whole. Mike will share his perspective as a long-time leader of community based workforce development and anti-poverty programs in Minneapolis, to point to efforts that are showing promise while challenging the audience to consider a greater urgency to confront these issues of institutional racism, access to educational and economic opportunities and job readiness.

Mike Wynne is a 1989 Hamline CLA graduate in Sociology and Urban Studies. He is the President and CEO of EMERGE Community Development, a community based non-profit located in North Minneapolis that provides a range of career and employment opportunities, financial education, family housing and commercial redevelopment work.
